How I can help
You may be living with worry that is hard to switch off, feeling low or overwhelmed, carrying work or financial pressure, or trying to find your way through loss, relationship strain or a major life change. We begin with what life is like for you and explore it together, at a pace and in a way that feels right for you.
What to expect
There is no perfect way to begin and no pressure to arrive with a fixed goal. You can bring whatever feels present, and we take it one conversation at a time.
Send a message or question. You do not need to explain everything or find the right words before making contact.
Our first conversation is a chance to talk, ask questions and notice whether working together feels comfortable and helpful.
At your pace, we pay attention to thoughts, feelings and what you notice in your body, making room for understanding and change.
About me & my approach

I’m Nic Higham, a male counsellor in Melton Mowbray, BACP-registered and also qualified as a life coach. I completed my counsellor training in 2009 and now offer face-to-face sessions in Melton Mowbray as well as online appointments.
I have worked in mental health services since 2004, including more than a decade in the NHS. My roles have included service transformation, serving as an elected governor and teaching mindfulness at an NHS recovery college. I later led mental health service-improvement programmes for a national social justice charity, helping to strengthen choice and autonomy for marginalised communities.
That experience continues to shape the way I work: with respect for your knowledge of your own life, curiosity about what you are experiencing and care for the circumstances that have brought you here. I do not see you as a problem to be fixed or myself as the expert on your life.
My counselling is collaborative and integrative, drawing on person-centred and humanistic approaches and adapting to you rather than following one rigid method. Life coaching shares the same collaborative foundation while giving more attention to your choices, direction and practical movement towards what matters.
See if we feel like a good fitClient feedback
Nic Higham has been a godsend. From where I was at the start of my journey to where I am now is just amazing how far I have come. I feel comfortable talking to Nic and he helped me realise a lot of things. I needed help for a long time and I can honestly say Nic has saved me. I cannot wait to continue this journey and growth.

Common questions
I offer one-to-one counselling for adults aged 18 and over. I do not offer couples counselling, family therapy or counselling for children and young people.
No. There is no fixed agenda and you do not need a polished explanation. We can begin with whatever feels most present, even if that is simply a sense that something is not quite right.
Counselling is private. The usual limits to confidentiality, including situations involving serious risk or legal requirements, will be explained clearly before we begin.
Sessions are conversational and unhurried. We may untangle something confusing, connect past and present, or stay close to what you are thinking, feeling and noticing in your body. There is no script to follow.
Each session lasts 50 minutes, with fees offered on a sliding scale from £30 to £70, so that affordable private counselling in Melton Mowbray is available to people on different incomes.
Yes. Counselling can offer space to understand what may be contributing to anxiety, persistent worry, stress, low mood or feeling overwhelmed. We work with your experience as a whole person rather than treating you as a list of symptoms.
Yes. Private counselling is an alternative to NHS therapy for adults in Melton Mowbray and across Leicestershire: there is no referral and no waiting list, so we can arrange a first conversation whenever you feel ready. I worked in NHS mental health services for more than a decade and hold them in high regard. Private counselling is not better, simply another route, and one where you decide the timing.
It can be. CBT is structured and usually runs for a set number of sessions. If you are looking for an alternative to CBT in Leicestershire, my work is more open-ended: together we gain insight, clarity and self-acceptance, identify what you value and how you want to live, and understand your needs and find workable ways to meet them, all within a supportive relationship. If a structured, time-limited approach did not fit you, this way of working may suit you better.
Counselling offers room to understand emotional difficulties, relationships and the influence of past or present experiences. Life coaching uses the same collaborative approach with a stronger focus on choices, direction and practical change.
Yes. Counselling and life coaching sessions are available online, so you can access support wherever you are.
